Ask a room of salon owners what their lawful basis is for keeping client records and most will say 'consent, they signed the form'. That is usually the wrong answer, and it creates a problem they do not know they have.

Health information — allergies, medication, skin conditions — is special category data. It needs a lawful basis and an additional condition on top. This sounds frightening and is actually routine: you are keeping it because you need it to treat somebody safely.

Most nail businesses do not owe the ICO a data protection fee — cosmetic treatment providers generally fall outside it. Install a CCTV camera for crime prevention and you do owe it. The camera is the trigger, and it catches out an enormous number of salons.
